Ovarian Cancer Research Masquerade Ball 2011

I was eating dinner with my son at the Black Walnut Cafe in Rice Village last week. We go there at least twice a month because we love their food and they let me order from the kids menu (they have large portions).

As we were eating dinner, I noticed a group of women a few tables down from us. I'm not someone who eavesdrops, but it sounded like they were planning a fundraiser. Before we left, I contemplated about going over and telling them about my business as well as my husband's salon and asking them if they needed any sponsors, but I was afraid to interrupt for some reason.

I bit the bullet and decided to approach them. I basically apologized for interrupting and asked them if they were planning a fundraiser. To my surprise, they were super friendly and they were planning for the Ovarian Cancer Masquerade Ball. I told them about my shop and also told them about Justin's hair salon. I said we would be happy to offer things for their auction if they would like us to.

We exchanged info and a woman named Maya, the chairwoman of the masquerade ball, said she would be in touch. She emailed me the following day with all of the details. I decided to donate three vintage jewelry sets to benefit their auction.

I met Maya at Starbucks yesterday to give her my donations. One of the jewelry sets I donated was a 1940s vintage Weiss gold tone green crystal brooch and earrings set. One of Justin's clients had just given this set to me last week:

I also donated a really beautiful c. 1950s vintage aurora borealis necklace and earring set as well as a c.1940s-1950s vintage rhinestone brooch, necklace and earrings set. I told Maya I may try to get a few more sets together for the Ovarian Cancer Masquerade Ball.

I started researching ovarian cancer and there is really no way to detect this specific type of cancer until it's too late. According to Mayo Clinic, common symptoms include:

* Abdominal pressure, fullness, swelling or bloating
* Pelvic discomfort or pain
* Persistent indigestion, gas or nausea
* Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation
* Changes in bladder habits, including a frequent need to urinate
* Loss of appetite or quickly feeling full
* Increased abdominal girth or clothes fitting tighter around your waist
* A persistent lack of energy
* Low back pain

Most of these symptoms are symptoms that many women experience frequently. I'm sponsoring this event because I want to raise awareness about ovarian cancer and I also think it's for a great cause. If you want to become involved or donate to this cause, please visit the Ovarian Cancer Masquerade Ball website. You can make a donation in any amount or purchase tickets by visiting here.

Please feel free to spread the word and share this post.

I've decided to keep my mid century modern Wegner style lounge chair...

I wrote a few days ago about the mid century modern Hans Wegner style lounge chair I purchased to resell in my shop. Yesterday, I decided to use some fabric I purchased at an estate sale and slip cover the ugly original cushions. I thought we could use the chair until it sold.

This is the fabric I used to cover the chair with:

I decided to put the chair and ottoman in our bedroom when I finished. Justin, my husband, thought it was our chair from downstairs (I have an identical chair already, but no ottoman). I told him, "no, this is a new chair with an ottoman". He was like, "you need to keep this set". I agreed with him. Chairs like this, especially with the ottoman, don't pop up at estate sales everyday. I'm glad he wanted to keep it, because I did too!

Vintage mid century danish modern arm chair and matching ottoman

So I went to an estate sale here in Houston a few days ago and found this amazing vintage mid century danish modern arm chair and matching ottoman:

I wouldn't say the set is so amazing just yet. Both pieces do need to be reupholstered with some modern day fabric because the current fabric is BUTT ugly, but the chair/ottoman design are super fabulous! You can look at the listing in my detail by clicking on the photo above!

I was promoted to team leader on Etsy Recyclers Guild team! Yay!

I joined the Etsy Recyclers Guild team this past November. I've been a part of other Etsy teams in the past, but never really felt like I belonged. From day one, I've truly felt like a member of the Etsy Recyclers Guild team. Cindy of Retro Chalet is our team captain and she has made me feel so warm and welcome. I cannot say enough good things about her. I just received an email a few minutes ago via Etsy and it said that I had been promoted to team leader! Yay for me! Thank you to Cindy and the Etsy Recyclers Guild team.

Vintage 1950s silhouettes duplicated

I love the fashion site Asos. They've duplicated 1950s silhouettes, which can be found here.

ASOS Full Mini Prom Skirt $51.72
This red circle skirt screams 1950s! I had a black circle skirt, very similar to this one listed in my shop awhile back. It was tiny, but really cute!

ASOS Bardot Short Sleeve Crop Top $13.79
The title of this top has the name, "Bardot" in it, obviously taken after actress Brigitte Bardot. It's fitted, cropped and has a scoop neckline, just like the the tops from the 1950s.

Fashion always evolves into something else and history always repeats itself. Every season, designers incorporate details or fashions from the past. It would be nice for some new designers to invent something new for a change.
